Alleged Drunk Driver Accused of Killing Johnny Gaudreau Now Indentified
Background of the Accused
The Calgary Police Service has identified Richard "Rick'' Scurr as the driver responsible for the fatal hit-and-run that claimed the lives of NHL star Johnny Gaudreau and his brother, Matthew.
Crash Details
On November 12, 2022, the two brothers were struck by a speeding vehicle while crossing a street in downtown Calgary.
Gaudreau, a 27-year-old forward for the Columbus Blue Jackets, was pronounced dead at the scene, while his 30-year-old brother passed away in hospital.
Restraint Measures and Investigation
Scurr, 56, was arrested at the scene and charged with two counts of impaired driving causing death and two counts of failing to remain at the scene of an accident.
Police allege that Scurr's blood-alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit at the time of the crash.
He appeared in court on September 13, 2023, and was remanded into custody until his next appearance on November 7, 2023.

Previous Offenses

Scurr is scheduled to stand trial on the current charges in March 2024.
If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of life in prison.
